Study finds that cats may be healthier on a vegan diet (don't jump into this)

Feeding your beloved kitty a vegan diet to help keep them healthy and happy, and avoid killing other animals sounds like an attractive proposition. However, we all know that cats are obligate carnivors and will suffer and die if not fed an all-meat diet, but this new study suggests that's not the case, because as long as all the nutrients are present in the food, it doesn't matter where they come from.

Yeah, maybe, but it's not been running for long enough or had enough participants to say for sure, so I wouldn't go rushing into it. Still, it may be possible to do this one day which will be a great benefit all round.

One thing they haven't mentioned in the article is how much the cats actually like the taste of their vegan diets. Have you ever tasted vegan versions of meat? Horrible. Exactly, so what does a cat make of it? Time to ask Tiddles...

Cats, owners will attest, are natural born killers and for most of their evolutionary history have enjoyed an almost entirely meat-based diet. However, fresh research has suggested that a vegan diet is not only safe for pet cats, but may have health benefits.

The study found that owners of cats fed vegan diets reported fewer visits to the vet, less medication use and said that their vet would be more likely to describe their cat as healthy. The findings provide reassurance to a growing number of owners who are considering alternative diets for their pets, the researchers said.

“Biologically, what cats need is not meat, but a specific set of nutrients, said Prof Andrew Knight, of the University of Winchester, who led the research. “There’s no scientific reason why you can’t supply all the necessary nutrients through plant additives.”

Pet food production has a significant environmental impact and a growing number of cat and dog owners are interested in alternative diets.

Very interesting! I'm still kind of on the fence about vegan diets for cats, but am interested.

ok. If you ask me, this idea is bonkers.
People are taking supplements in the misguided belief that it would counteract a junk diet. It does not work. You can overdose on certain vitamins and minerals if you take them as supplements, but you can never overdose if you get your vit+minerals via proper food.

Now they want the poor kitties to get the full compliments of necessary micro nutrients via supplementation, turn a carnivore into a cow.....do me a favor.

Somebody somewhere is having a financial interest.....It is a crazy, harmful and above all, an Arrogant idea.

I think you nailed it. The "science" unfortunately, can easily be corrupted by big money payoffs as we've seen with the ULEZ scheme scam.

On top of that, the technology to create lab-grown meat and end animal suffering and death from farming them (gross) is available today, therefore, producing cat food with it will be a piece of cake. (I'm sure there's a pun there somewhere, lol.)
